Hello Adventurous Souls,

It’s not just a trek—it’s an experience of peace, thrill, and connection with the earth (and sky!).
In this blog, I’ll walk you through my full itinerary, essential tips, gear checklist, and all those real, unscripted moments—from slippery climbs to that goosebump-worthy sunrise!
Whether you’re going solo, joining a group, or tagging your friends for an early morning mission, I hope this post helps you plan the perfect Skandagiri trek. So grab your coffee (you’ll need one for this 3 AM start!), find a cozy spot, and let’s relive the story. 🌄🌲☁️
The Magic of Skandagiri
Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, rises 1,450 meters above sea level in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district. Once a strategic stronghold of Tipu Sultan, it has evolved into one of South India’s most popular trekking destinations. The trek is renowned for its mesmerizing sunrise above a sea of clouds, offering an “above the clouds” sensation that captivates every adventurer. The climb is not merely physical—it is also a soulful experience. Under the starlit sky, trekkers ascend through dense forests and rocky trails, anticipating the magical moment when the first golden, orange, and pink rays of dawn burst over the horizon.
Historical Legacy: Tipu Sultan’s Lost Fortress
The summit of Skandagiri is dotted with ruins that narrate Karnataka’s rich history. Built in the 18th century by Tipu Sultan as part of his defensive network against the British, the Kalavara Durga fort once served as a vital watchtower and military base. Its height offered sweeping views of surrounding valleys and strategic approach routes. After Tipu Sultan’s defeat in the 1791 Anglo-Mysore War, the British dismantled the fort, leaving behind crumbling stone walls, watchtowers, and carved pillars. At the peak, an ancient Shiva temple—still housing remarkably preserved idols—attracts both devotees and history lovers.

My Personal Experience – A Soulful Morning Above the Clouds
Since 2020, I’ve been trekking solo—seeking silence, nature, and self-discovery on every trail. Luckily, a few months ago, I found a mate who shares the same love for mountains and mindful adventures. Together, we made a long list of treks around Bangalore and decided to experience them all—one trail at a time. For us, trekking isn’t just an activity; it’s a way of life. It connects us to nature, keeps our spirit alive, and purifies the soul. So stay tuned, because I’ll be dropping a curated list of the best treks around Bangalore soon! 🥾🌿
The night before, we packed all essentials—fuelled up the bike, grabbed trek snacks, some basic meds, and charged our hearts with excitement.
We woke up at 3:00 AM, bathed in silence, took a refreshing shower, and by 3:30, our bike was humming—ready to embrace the journey. We rolled out from Whitefield, and after 30 km, paused for a quick check and a breath of cool, quiet air. At that hour, when the world sleeps and highways feel like your personal runway—it’s surreal. There’s something magical about riding under the stars, chasing your purpose while the sky still dreams.
We reached the base (near the temple) around 5:10 AM. The sunrise was due at 6:15, and though we missed the very first light, reaching safely mattered more. As we geared up and began our ascent, the forest welcomed us with mist, mystery, and magnificence.
Every single step on that trail felt symbolic—like life itself. No one can walk your path for you. It’s just you, the rocks, the slippery soil, the narrow ledges, the patient rhythm of your heartbeat—and your determination. Each obstacle was a reminder: patience, persistence, and presence are the real companions of any journey.
There were moments when we felt clouds gently brushing our faces, the wind whispering stories only the forest could hear, birds singing a background score meant just for us. With every breath of crisp mountain air and every drop of sweat, we felt alive—truly alive.
When we finally reached the summit, it was nothing short of divine. A 360° panoramic view, the ancient Shiva temple radiating peace, and a feeling that the universe had paused—just for us. The cold breeze up there had a strange warmth to it, as if the mountain was hugging us in silence.
We sat there, breathless yet calm, eyes closed in gratitude. We visited the temple, bowed our heads, and thanked Shiva—for the journey, the strength, and the dreams we still carry.
Every trek has a meaning, and this one taught me to live with purpose. Me and my mate had a beautiful time—not just trekking—but reconnecting with our thoughts, our breath, and nature.
If you’re reading this and wondering whether Skandagiri is worth it—the answer is a big, heartfelt YES. ❤️
