The name Kheerganga is derived from a legend that states the Keerganga springs were once filled with rice puddings provided by Lord Shiva. Kheerganga’s history is rich and has profound religious significance both to Hindus and Sikhs. According to popular local folklore, after losing the great race against Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikey decided to seclude himself and meditate in these hills. 2. MY KHEERGANGA TREKKING EXPERIENCE

This was my second visit to Kheerganga. Earlier, I went in August 2022, and this time, I wanted to trek again to experience its mesmerizing beauty during the high summer of May 2023, a welcome break from the scorching Delhi heat. Packed with excitement, I readied my rucksack and trekking gear in Delhi, ready for the journey to Kasol. Boarding a bus from Majnu ka Tila. On the way, there was a landslide near Mandi, Himachal Pradesh and I got stuck. But I was determined to reach Kheerganga, as it was the only reason, I had taken a break from work.

I met a few other people who were also trying to get to Kasol, and we decided to book a taxi together. It took us a few hours to reach Kasol, but we finally made it.

I checked into a hotel called "The Hill Side" which is near the kasol bus stand. It was a a spacious place with a fantastic room offering a splendid view of snow-capped mountains and the rising sun, an instant mood lifter. The well-maintained room, helpful staff, and delicious breakfast made my stay delightful. Next morning, after breakfast, I commenced my trek from Kasol. Waiting for the bus at Kasol bus stand to Barsaini, after reaching Barsaini, I picked up essential trekking gear: trekking pole, boots, rain jacket, energy bars, and more.

I set off from Barsaini, trekking through the forest path for about 5-6 hours to reach the summit. It was important to stay hydrated and take breaks whenever needed. I also asked for help from other trekkers if I needed it. Everyone was very helpful and friendly.

I reached the top of Kheerganga just as the sun was setting. It was an amazing experience to watch the sunset behind the mountains. I took the opportunity to showcase my photography skills, capturing the mountains against the backdrop of the sky touching the clouds.

As darkness fell, I hurried to find a tent or camp to spend the night atop Kheerganga. After some searching, I found a camp offering clean facilities, electricity, Wi-Fi, a hygienic bathroom, a heated room, food, a bonfire, and ample space to relax. It was a great find, and I felt elated. I spent the night, and the next morning, the weather took a turn. Waking up to a clear sky, it soon transitioned to rain, and then unexpectedly, snow. I considered myself extremely lucky. It started snowing moderately while I was at the temple, and I felt very lucky to be experiencing all four seasons in one day. I took a bath and had darshan at the temple while it was snowing, and it was an incredible experience. Experiencing all seasons at once, I felt truly amazed.

I would highly recommend the Kheerganga trek to anyone who loves nature and adventure. It is a beautiful and challenging trek that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels and by following these do's and don'ts, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable Kheerganga trekking experience.
